Methods of spreading athletes foot

How is athlete’s foot spread?

The warmth and dampness of areas around swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms are breeding grounds for fungi. Because the infection was common among athletes who used these facilities frequently, the term "athlete's foot" became popular. Other things to consider include:
  • This fungus can be contracted by sharing the shoes of an infected person.
  • It needs a warm moist environment to flourish and has been found growing on the floors of locker rooms and public showers and in swimming pools and whirlpools.
  • The fungus can also be transmitted by contact with pets who carry it on their fur.
Not all fungus conditions are athlete's foot. Other conditions, such as disturbances of the sweat mechanism, reaction to dyes or adhesives in shoes, eczema, and psoriasis also may mimic athlete's foot.
