What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks, medically known as striae gravidarum, are caused by excessive stretching of the skin. Stretch marks may vary in their appearance. Depending on your skin color, when they first show up they may have a reddish or purplish coloration and appear slightly indented into the skin, with a noticeably different texture. In many cases, stretch marks may fade over time. The reddish-brown pigmentation turns info glistening silvery lines of scar tissue.

Regardless of the color change, their texture normally remains fairly consistent. Since scar tissue tends to have less melanin (pigment), tanning may make them become more visible as they may not darken with the surrounding skin.

Pregnancy and stretch marks

Pregnant women start to develop marks on the abdomen during the second half of pregnancy as the skin stretches to accommodate the growing baby. However, besides the abdomen, stretch marks commonly occur on the hips, breasts and buttocks due to either gaining or losing weight in these areas. Almost half of all expectant women will get stretch marks during pregnancy.

Other causes of stretch marks

In addition to pregnancy, stretch marks may be caused by weight gain, bodybuilding or weightlifting, as well as from rapid growth spurts common during puberty. Some other known causes can be the result of using steroidal creams or ointments, such as hydrocortisone, if used on the skin for longer than a few weeks. High doses of corticosteroids taken orally for longer than a month may also contribute to the occurrence of stretch marks.

Many teenagers will acquire stretch marks during puberty growth, and many men develop stretch marks from rapid weight gain or loss, and weight lifting.

Stretch Marks, Scars, and Bruising

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Helichrysum italicum and other plant extracts.

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the aerial part of Helichrysum italicum extracts have been established in various in-vivo and in-vitro experimental models. The results obtained on the acute oedemas induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) and ethyl phenylpropiolate in the mouse ear, by serotonin and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in the mouse paw, on chronic inflammation induced by repeated application of TPA in the mouse ear and on the delayed-type hypersensitivity induced by sheep red blood cells suggest that said anti-inflammatory activity is due to the effects of compounds expressed via a corticoid-like mechanism. In addition, the antioxidant activity of the extracts seems to be implicated in this anti-inflammatory activity, as the former inhibits enzymatic and non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation and has free-radical scavenger properties. We conclude that the anti-inflammatory activity of Helichrysum italicum can be explained by multiple effects, including inflammatory enzyme inhibition, free-radical scavenging activity and corticoid-like effects.
