What is nail fungus?

Nail fungus is made up of tiny organisms that can infect fingernails and toenails called dermatophytes. A nail fungus infection usually begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the nail fungus spreads deeper into your nail, it may cause your nail to discolor, thicken and develop crumbling edges.

Infections of nail fungus account for about half of all nail disorders. More than 35 million people in the United States get nail fungus.

The nails of our fingers and toes are very effective barriers that make it quite difficult for a superficial infection to invade the nail. Once an infection has set up residence however, the same barrier that was so effective in protecting us against infection now works against us, making it difficult to treat the infection. The fungus lives underneath the nail, which provides a safe place for the fungus and protects it while it grows. Most often, nail fungus appears in the toenails. This is because socks and shoes keep the toenails dark, warm, and moist. This is a perfect place for the fungus to grow. The toenails are 6 to 7 times more likely to be infected than fingernails.

Toe nail fungus: It can be serious

Toe nail fungus can be painful and may cause permanent damage to your nails. They may also lead to other serious infections that can spread beyond your feet. In addition, they can pose a serious health risk for people with diabetes and for those with weakened immune systems. If you have diabetes, your blood circulation and the nerve supply to your feet can become impaired. Therefore, any relatively minor injury to your feet (including a nail fungal infection) can lead to a more serious complication, such as an open sore that's difficult to heal. See your doctor immediately if you suspect nail fungus.

My husband and I wanted to drop you a quick line and tell you how much we appreciate your Dermisil AF product for the treatment of our nail fungus. We have spent many years going the the swimming pool and had contracted toe nail fungus from the wet environment. After using for two weeks we noticed an immediate improvement in our nail beds. It has taken months for our nails to grow out, but they are fungus free!! We will continue to use your products!!

Thanks!

Antifungal activity of the components of Melaleuca alternifolia.

Hammer KA, Carson CF, Riley TV.
Discipline of Microbiology, School of Biomedical and Chemical Sciences, The University of Western Australia, Crawley, WA, Australia. khammer@cyllene.uwa.edu.au

AIMS: To investigate the in vitro antifungal activity of the components of Melaleuca alternifolia oil. METHODS AND RESULTS: Activity was investigated by broth microdilution and macrodilution, and time kill methods. Components showing the most activity, with minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum fungicidal concentrations of < or =0.25%, were terpinen-4-ol, alpha-terpineol, linalool, alpha-pinene and beta-pinene, followed by 1,8-cineole. The remaining components showed slightly less activity and had values ranging from 0.5 to 2%, with the exception of beta-myrcene which showed no detectable activity. Susceptibility data generated for several of the least water-soluble components were two or more dilutions lower by macrodilution, compared with microdilution. CONCLUSIONS: All Melaleuca Alternifolia components, except beta-myrcene, had antifungal activity. The lack of activity reported for some components by microdilution may be due to these components becoming absorbed into the polystyrene of the microtitre tray. This indicates that plastics are unsuitable as assay vessels for tests with these or similar components. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study has identified that most components of Melaleuca Alternifolia have activity against a range of fungi. However, the measurement of antifungal activity may be significantly influenced by the test method.
