Hemorrhoids

What are hemorrhoids?Hemorrhoids are veins in the anal canal that enlarge and become engulfed in blood which can become painful during a bowel movement, sitting, or standing for long periods of time. Hemorrhoids develop from two different places – the two sets of veins that drain the blood from the lower rectum and anus.
- The internal veins can become swollen to form internal hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids, unless they are severe, cannot be seen or felt, unlike external hemorrhoids.
- Likewise, the external veins can swell to form external hemorrhoids. External hemorrhoids can be seen around the outside of the anus and, many times, can be felt.
Who gets hemorrhoids?Hemorrhoids can increase with age, constipation, and chronic diarrhea. Hemorrhoids may also develop in pregnant women due to internal pressure as the baby grows in size. Nearly 50% of the adult population will have hemorrhoids during their lifetime. The condition can occur at any time but is more common in adults over 30 years of age.
What causes hemorrhoids?Hemorrhoids are often associated with a dietary deficiency in fiber. They can form when inner-abdominal pressure increases from straining during defecation or from lack of fecal bulk. Hemorrhoids are also common during periods of hormonal stress and pregnancy in women. Liver disease can also cause increased pressure in the veins and also cause hemorrhoids.
