Learn How Much and When to Use Moisturizer for Maximum Benefits
If you are like me, you probably use too much or no moisturizer. I’m a lousy offender of general suggestions on labels of applying products more than once a day. There seems to be no room for a happy medium. Though some products give you some advice, many often don’t, leaving you to figure it out on your own: Should I apply liberally or go light?
It depends on the type of moisturizer you’re using, your skin type, and where on the body you’re using it. For example, suppose you struggle with dry skin. In that case, you might opt for an extensive moisturizer that will be absorbed quickly into your skin. What if you have oily skin on your face. In that instance, you might want something light that won’t leave you looking or feeling greasy. And may help reduce the amount of oil your skin produces to compensate for not being moisturized enough.
When Is The Best Time To Moisturize?
The best time to moisturize is right after a shower or bath. It's the most optimal time to apply moisturizer. The reason is that the pores on your skin are still open and absorb moisturizer readily, making it more effective in combating dry skin.
Another tip? Lower the temperature of the water. Hot showers and soaks are always very relieving at the end of a long day. But did you know that heat can dehydrate your skin, causing it to feel dry and itchy, and even cause the symptoms of common skin issues like eczema to worsen? Try to lower the temperature to more of a lukewarm (or just a little warmer if you like) to help keep your skin from getting so dry.
How Much Lotion Do I Use For My Body?
For optimal results, after your shower, simply pat your skin dry gently with a towel, dispense the moisturizer into your hands and rub them together to warm it up.
For your legs: Dispense a quarter-sized moisturizer and apply it to each leg and torso.
For your arms: Use roughly a nickel-sized amount on each.
For your hands: Using a dime-sized amount can help keep your hands moisturized, especially during cold winter when hand washing is vital!
For your face: Facial moisturizers are generally more concentrated, so you don’t need as much for great results. Use roughly a pea-sized amount, applying in a circular motion to really help enhance absorption.
As always, I hope these tips help! Remember, your skin is the largest organ of the body. Pamper it well!
