Getting Hands On: The Benefits of Massage Therapy
Alana Korol
Massage therapy is where a licensed massage therapist specifically targets and manually manipulates muscle groups to release tension and knots from sore or overworked muscles.
There are all kinds of massage therapies available today. The most popular are sports or full body massage. That's where a licensed massage therapist should confer with you before beginning the session about what areas you feel need more attention or maybe hurt and need to be avoided. They should also discuss the pressure they will be applying to ensure you are comfortable. If you have had an injury, let them know.
How Can Massage Help?
There are many incredible benefits to massage therapy. Massages not only help ease and relax tense muscles. But they also help reduce stress and promote blood flow to areas of the body that need extra healing. This can make you feel refreshed and better prepared to return to your daily routine.
Should A Massage Hurt? Should I Be Sore After A Massage?
Sometimes, a massage may be uncomfortable if you have trouble areas or are recovering from an injury. However, if you experience discomfort or pain anytime during the massage, be sure to alert your massage therapist immediately! You may also feel sore and achy after a good massage session. It depends on what areas were more or less tense before the massage and the massage therapist's general pressure applied to the site. I know from experience that if I have worked in the yard, my back aches, and I will ask for more pressure to work the knots out. Sometimes, I will be sore the next day. I slap on a cold compress, and I am good to go!
What Should I Do After A Massage?
You should plan ahead for a day (or the rest of your afternoon/evening) of relaxation and calm after a good massage session. Drink lots of water to help flush out the toxins released from your muscles during the massage, practice some mindfulness meditation, and try some lavender essential oil in a diffuser or a hot bath to help you continue that relaxed feeling after the massage! I may even have a glass of wine or two! :)
