Where it comes from depends on the type of Mange that your pet might have. There are two types of Mange, but most animals contract the highly contagious Sarcoptic Mange. 

If your pet has contracted this type of Mange, then more than likely, your pet picked this up from another animal or animal's items (bedding, toys, cage, etc.). This could have happened when the animals were touched, like wrestling or rubbing up against one another, or your pet could have contracted Sarcoptic Mange by laying in another animal's bed, playing with their toy, or being placed in another dog's cage.

There are two types: Demodectic Mange, caused by the mite Demodex canis, and Sarcoptic Mange, caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. There are distinct differences between them: Demodectic Mange is NOT contagious to other dogs, cats, or humans, while Sarcoptic Mange IS VERY CONTAGIOUS to humans and other dogs.

**It is also important to note that Demodectic Mange is immune-deficient dermatitis, meaning the dog has little or no immunity against it, whereas Sarcoptic Mange is very contagious. This type of Mange can be contracted by any dog (humans can also get it).

The best way to know for sure is to have your pet diagnosed by the veterinarian by doing a skin scraping and seeing the live or dead mites under the microscope.

With the two different types of Mange, there is also a difference in the way that the skin responds to each:

In cases of Demodectic Mange, there is slight hair loss in the early stages around the face and forelimbs with little discomfort or scratching. In neglected cases, the dog can go bald and have open infected sores.

In cases of Sarcoptic Mange, the pet will experience an intense itch, a lot of discomforts, and skin redness. In the early stages, the edges of the ears are usually irritated and very sensitive. It also can progress to baldness and open infected wounds in neglected cases.

Demodectic Mange requires weeks of treatment, including injections of a parasiticide, medicated baths, and sponge baths, and no isolation is necessary for the pet.

Unfortunately, because Sarcoptic Mange is so contagious, the afflicted animal should be kept in isolation until treatment is completed. This may require only one good bath (when it is caught and handled early enough), or a few of the condition was not caught immediately.

Naturasil Pet Mange is the perfect solution to help soothe the itching and kill the infestation that your pet is struggling with. It is imperative to remember that cleaning your home and your pet's environment will help get rid of any leftover Pet Mites that could be hiding out, especially the bedding. We suggest spraying all toys and bedding with BenzaRid Disinfectant and washing anything that is a washable fabric.

Once your pet shows no more signs of having Mange or living Mites on them, they can be removed from isolation. All animals in contact with this form of Mange should also be treated.

We always recommend reading the instructions thoroughly before proceeding with any actions.

Before proceeding with mixing and applying the mixture, make sure to wear gloves and eyeglasses when mixing. (This is a potent concentrate, and you do not want any of this solution to get into your eyes accidentally.)

You will want to mix 25mL of Naturasil Pet Mange (half of the bottle) into an empty bottle, then add two oz. of water and five oz. of shampoo (baby, pet, or adult). Mix the product thoroughly before applying it to your pet's fur, making sure to coat the hair and massage it to get down to the skin.

The product will need to sit on the fur for 5-7 minutes. Finally, rinse the coat and allow the skin and coat to air dry. Repeat this process every 5-7 days, giving your pet at least 2-3 medicated baths.

You will want to give these medicated baths in a disposable washbasin in a well-ventilated area. We recommend giving this bath outside, if possible. This potent concentrate does have a distinct odor.

The question of how long it will take to work depends on how long your pet has had this problem, how quickly you reacted to treating this issue and how closely you have followed the directions for this concentrate.

When pet mange is caught quickly, it can only take a few days to see vast improvements (hair regrowth/skin tone evens/intense itching subsides). However, in the cases of severe pet mange, it might take multiple baths and weeks before any vast improvements show(hair regrowth/skin tone evens/intense itching subsides).

This solution should be stored in a cool, dry place before and after it is opened.

Keep this product away from heat and flames.

Once mixed, keep any extra solution mixture out of the sun between applications.

Naturasil Pet Mange is safe to use on cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies over the age of 3 months.

Sarcoptic Mange is contagious to all animals, so it is possible that any animal at any age could contract this from another animal. The risk of contracting Mange from a clean and sterile home is doubtful. Still, if your pet is put into the same situation where they initially acquired the  Sarcoptic Mange, your Four-Legged Best Friend could be scratching that same itch again! 

Demodectic Mange is not likely to be contracted by a healthy, full-grown animal. This type of Mange is mainly connected with puppies/kittens or young animals because it is immune-deficient dermatitis (meaning the pet has little or no immunity against it.) Older dogs can also be more prone to this type of Mange because of their weakened immune system. Pets with this type of Mange can contract it again if the immune system is challenged, but after three, it will not likely show up again.
