Once these mites create burrows, they begin to lay eggs. As more mites are born, the rash grows and becomes itchier due to more and more waste, secretions, and molted skin.

It can take several weeks to begin showing symptoms of scabies, but you are still contagious during this time, which is called the incubation period.

A person who has had mites before usually begins to show symptoms within a few days of contracting them, lessening the length of the incubation period and thus the time they are unknowingly infecting others.
