"Mite" is commonly used to describe a collection of insect-like organisms.

Some of these creatures bite and irritate humans. In contrast, others are scavengers that feed on plants or prey on other insects and arthropods.

There are almost as many types of mites as there are insects, and they follow a similar life cycle to ticks.

They go through four stages of development: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. All stages have eight legs except for the six-legged larva.

Mites are usually spread by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with someone with mites.

Contact generally must be extended; a quick handshake or hug usually will not spread mites.

Mites are distributed easily to partners and household members.

Mites are also spread indirectly by sharing articles such as clothing, towels, or bedding used by an infected person.

Mites can be found worldwide and affects people of all races and social classes. Having mites does not indicate someone's cleanliness

Typical indications of mites include small, raised bumps on the skin accompanied by swelling or blistering.

It's important to note that mites cannot survive more than 2-3 days when not in contact with human skin.

If someone has mites, their bedding, clothing, and towels can be safely cleaned by either machine-washing them in hot water and drying them on a hot cycle or by dry-cleaning them.
