Tinea versicolor, also know as pityriasis versicolor, is a common fungal infection of the skin. This particular type of Tinea is not contagious, though all other Tinea Infections are.
The fungus interferes with the normal pigmentation of the skin, resulting in small, discolored patches. These patches may be lighter or darker in color than the surrounding skin and most commonly affect the chest, trunk and shoulders. On lighter skin tones the rash may appear pink and scaly, on darker skin tones the loss of melanin caused by the fungal infection often causes this skin condition to be confused with Vitiligo, which is not treatable.
