Scabies is a skin infestation caused by the human itch mite, which burrows into the top layer of the skin and lays its eggs there.

Scabies is usually spread by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with someone with scabies. Contact generally must be extended; a quick handshake or hug usually will not spread scabies. Scabies is easily transmitted to partners and household members.

Scabies is also spread indirectly by sharing articles such as clothing, towels, or bedding used by an infected person.
